Firebacks are cast iron plates placed against the back firewall of the fireplace to keep it from getting too hot. These plates were made in Britain from the time when the method of casting iron was first understood, somewhere between the 14th and 16th century. The elaborately decorated fireback was vastly popular in the 16th and 17th centuries when they were cast in sand molds. Since they were easy to cast and the designs were pressed in the sand mold, many designs are available.
