Fireside KC - Furnishings

Fenders were originally flat or decorative bars at the bottom front of the fireplace opening. They were used to keep the hot ashes from falling onto the hearth. Since half of the ashes fell over this fender, it was redesigned to curve around the opening several inches from the firebox, thereby lending belief that the fender also helped to protect floor length skirts and coats from being burnt by the cinders. Naturally, today, fenders are more for decorative purposes and are intricately designed with pierce metal work or very simple 'rail' type with one, two or three bars. They can be finished in any metal finish and are extremely popular in the 'open hearth' look of the 21st century.
