Andirons are the original fire grates. As early as 300 AD, English history records the double andiron being used for getting air to the bottom of the fire, as well as holding spits and cooking pots. Although crude, even the earliest andirons showed decorative touches, such as animal heads and decorative columns, and later history shows family crests being added to the tops. Andirons were used in the earliest hearths, usually in the center of a large hall so that many people could enjoy the warmth of the fire. Today's' andirons are used mainly as decorative accents and may come with long shanks to hold the wood or gas logs or short shanks to place directly in front of the fireplace grate. Although originally only wrought iron, today's' andirons come in many metal finishes, varying heights and a plethora of designs. They add character and charm to any fireplace.
